The 21st Century is a seven-piece indie pop band based out of Berkeley, CA, that blends the chamber-pop orchestrations of Brian Wilson and The Zombies, the clever poetry of Leonard Cohen, the energy of The E Street Band, and the playful optimism of Belle & Sebastian. Frontman Bevan Herbekian’s distinctive melodies and off-beat lyrics lay atop intricate arrangements that feature a driving rhythm section, jangly guitars, warm four-part vocal harmonies, and a dynamic horn section, resulting in a sound that is unique, yet instantly familiar, and impressive in both concert and recordings.

In October 2010, The 21st Century raised nearly $11,000 on Kickstarter.com to fund the recording of their debut EP, which was recorded at the world-class Sonic Ranch Studios near El Paso, Texas. In February 2011, the band made the difficult decision to part ways with their producer – a two-time Grammy winner who has worked with artists such as Paul McCartney – after he drastically altered the songs during the mixing process. The band then spent most of 2011 working to restore these recordings. Finally, on January 6th, 2012, The 21st Century released their debut EP The City with a sold-out release show at San Francisco’s Red Devil Lounge.

The City stands as a testament to The 21st Century’s ambitious musical vision, and to its perseverance. Each song on the EP speaks of youthful exuberance, friendship, courtship, hardship, reconciliation with adulthood, and the poetry of everyday life. Its backdrop: San Francisco. The 21st Century is currently promoting The City, planning a trip to Austin for SXSW and a summer tour, and preparing songs for their first full-length – a concept album tentatively titled The Magic of True Love.
