The early nineties were a time when bands took risks, kept things simple, and redefined rock music for the MTV generation. One such band was Archers of Loaf. Formed in 1990, and comprised of singer/guitarist Eric Bachmann, guitarist Eric Johnson, Bassist Matt Gentling, and drummer Mark Price, Archers of Loaf went from indie to successful overnight. Their hit single “Web In Front,” was an instant success and led to the release of Icky Mettle, Archers of Loaf’s first full-length.
The subsequent years saw three albums in almost as many years. Their final album, White Trash Heroes, was where Archers of Loaf seemed to take a sudden departure from the formula that had led to their suc- cess. When it was released, the band had a difficult time translating the recorded tracks to the stage, due to the unique and pieced together manner that it had been recorded. The quartet had, until this point, built a reputation on their solid stage performance. Diffi- culty on stage led to difficulty as a band and in 1998 the band fell apart.
However, great music will not be kept down, and in early 2011 a secret show took place in North Carolina where the Archers of Loaf opened for local band The Love Language. This sudden reappearance reminded their fans of all that was great about them and the rest, as they say, is recent history.
Appearing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and per- forming powerful live shows has led to a resurgence in Archers of Loaf’s popularity. Even without new material they are making a new name for themselves among the jaded listeners of the 21st century. Ar- chers of Loaf are, without a doubt, capable of deliv- ering what the audience needs: powerful music, and passionate lyrics and live performances. The only thing left to ask for is new songs and a new album from a band as relevant today as when they started.
