Since his earliest days making tapes with a former Karaoke machine, consummate songwriter Brandon Cox has felt a connection with the name Atlas Sound. Yet, when the Atlanta native first became a sensation it was with his experimental dream pop, post-rock band, Deerhunter. Immediately hailed for ethereal atmospheres and driving a new wave revitalization, Deerhunter really broke through on their 2007 album, Cryptograms, a record led by Cox’s oft repetitive and reflective nature. The following year, Cox unveiled his longtime personal project, Atlas Sound, with the release of Let The Blind Lead Those Who See But Cannot Feel. Multi-layered and more focused than Deerhunter’s wandering songs, Atlas Sound highlighted Cox as a nuanced singer and hypnotic songwriter.
Over the last five years, Atlas Sound has gone from curious outcropping to respected solo act, as Cox has been able to not only keep up both of his projects, but continuously enliven and enrich them as well. This period of time saw Cox at his most prolific, writing with a constant, free association type of fervor and churning out complex and satisfying songs on a near daily basis. 2009 also saw Atlas Sound’s sophomore effort, Logos, expand on the previous record’s pop sensibilities and experimentation simultaneously, the penultimate of the artist’s efforts.
Still, Cox found room to revamp and transform, first returning with Deerhunter on 2010’s masterful album Halcyon Digest, and then again as Atlas Sound with 2011’s haunting release Parallax. Bouncing from the stripped down, soul baring tracks like “Te Amo” and the deep space haze of songs like “Doldrums,” Parallax illustrates a darker edge to the long time project. All the while, Atlas Sound still retains some aspect of that young innocence it was born from, infused with a wonderment and curiosity that never fails to endear.
