Budos Band is the soundtrack to your midnight ca- per–the funk of a thousand heists, double-crosses, and triumphant escapes. An Afrobeat collective formed in 2003 at a gathering organized by Anti- balas, Budos Band have taken the gritty jazz of the streets, added a distinctly Ethiopian flavor, and dis- tilled it for your listening pleasure. With serpentine bass riffs, atomic horn blasts, psychedelic keyboards, and percussion bubbling up throughout, the music of the Budos band will prepare you to meet your arch nemesis on the corner with a small suitcase full of unmarked bills.

Their third, most recent album, logically titled, Budos Band III, was written in their native Staten Island and recorded at Daptone Records’ House of Soul Studios in Brooklyn. In keeping with the era they have come to emulate, Budos albums are no-frills affairs geared to capture the spirit of their recordings. As baritone sax player Jared Tankel explained in a recent inter- view; “We have a pretty specific way that we record, which is all analogue to tape, and we record all live for the most part. What we’re trying to do is make records that sound like it’s from the early seventies.” Rehearsals are where the songs are named as well, which, thanks to drummer Brian Profilio, can result in titles that sound like Dungeons and Dragons quests. The band wrapped up 2011 with a West Coast tour, an ATP Christmas appearance and a sold-out New Year’s Eve show with Charles Bradley. With audienc- es comprised of hip-hop fanatics, jazz aficionados, and metal heads, Budos band have built a special bond with their fans, especially in our City by the Bay. Can San Francisco hope for an encore tweet-up and bar crawl with the band? With a ten person line-up, it might be wise to steer clear of a whisky shot duel.
