Singer/songwriter Craig Finn holds a reputation for being a natural storyteller and classic rock enthusiast whose songs merge personal ethos with complex narratives. Originally raised in Minneapolis, where many of his tunes take place, and now living in Brooklyn, Finn is best known as the frontman of The Hold Steady, a smartly tight knit group that deals with var- ied thematic elements in catchy indie rock standards. Formed at the turn of the millennium, and breaking through with their 2006 LP, Boys and Girls in America, Finn and company have been recording together with consistent critical praise and playing to an ever growing fan base. At the heart of the attention is Finn’s witty and illuminating spirit, guiding the band through bar stomping romps and crowd pleasing jams with ease and intellect.

Last year saw The Hold Steady on a bit of a hiatus, with the band overall adjusting to line up changes and Finn committing to a novel idea-turned-experi- ment-turned-mild obsession; crafting simple, acous- tic songs at the staggering rate of one per day. After amassing dozens of home recorded rough sketches over the course of a few months, Finn took his demos and relocated from his long time home in Brooklyn to the sweltering Austin summer and a three week cram session of recording. The result is Clear Heart Full Eyes, an album that is more intimate and vulner- able than anything Finn has produced before, and one that finds the songwriter rejuvenated with a youth- ful spirit and almost giddy delight in between the somber stories and stripped down songs. And yes, that is a Friday Night Lights reference in the album title, Finn’s own personal nod to his summer in Texas and a title that speaks to the wisdom gained and integrity earned over the course of a defining year.
