In 1995 Cursive first formed in Omaha, Nebraska. Starting with two quickly released EPs, and followed by a full length, Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes, Cursive made a mark for themselves on the independent music scene. After a few other short recordings they released their second LP, The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song, on Saddle Creek and then disbanded.
This might have been all she wrote, but fortunately for fans of pounding drums, jagged guitars and intense vocals, Cursive was really just getting started. They returned in 1999 to release the critically acclaimed Domestica, which set the tone for most if not all of their future albums. It was a concept album that was based upon two fictional characters and their broken relationship. The thematic elements of domestic life, cheating, and broken homes struck a chord with their listeners and influenced future albums.
Though the band did take another hiatus in 2004, it was only temporary and, once again, the break only strengthened the writing skills and musical talents of the foursome. Cursive, currently comprised of Tim Kasher, Matt Maginn, Ted Stevens and Cully Symington, continue their tradition of weaving their music around a central story to convey their ideas. Their upcoming LP, due out in February 2012 and titled I am Gemini, tells the story of twin brothers, Cassius and Pollock who are the stereotypical yin and yang, evil and good. The two, who were separated at birth, are reunited in a house where they face off over the souls of the damned. Fortunately, this battle is played out in typical Cursive fashion with heavy, melodic singles that are both catchy, rhythmic pop and intense, ear blistering melodies that leave one’s musical soul aching for more.
More is exactly what can be found at one of Cursive’s live shows. They put on a critically acclaimed spectacle, which helps solidify their fans appreciation and attract new listeners. To support I am Gemini, Cursive will be touring the United States in the early part of 2012 and beyond.
