The Dodos are an unconventional San Francisco rock group, favoring marimba instead of distortion and a drum kit with no bass drum. We caught up with drummer Logan Kroeber to get his thoughts on the new album and his band’s signature sound.

NICOLAS GRIZZLE

NP: You worked with Neko Case on No Color, did that change your approach to songwriting?

LK: I think Meric had some sections where he knew that her voice would sound good and then Neko pretty much just let it rip. She improvised most of her parts in just a couple days, which was pretty impressive.

NP: What’s it like playing without a bass drum compared to playing a regular kit?

LK: I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, as we’ve had some time off and for fun I’ve been playing a regular kit again. For one, it’s easier to overplay on a regular kit. And my anchor is my right foot on a regular kit, while for the dodos kit it’s my right hand. My hands are a lot more agile than my feet so it’s been hard to feel solid on a bass drum again. Also having lots of cymbals again is fun but kind of shrill or high endy sometimes. I’m sure that’s enough drum nerdery for now.

NP: To what do you attribute the unique rhythmic sound of Dodos songs? Does a song generally start with a set rhythm, more of a guitar riff, or something else entirely?

LK: Songs usually start with a beat or a riff. We figure out how to play it well, real repetitive like, and then Meric starts to sing over it thinking of melodies. And yes there are certain types of rhythms we gravitate towards, that are inspired by a variety of sources, but they are usually pretty syncopated.

NP: When do the Dodos start recording the next album?

LK: That’s probably a ways off. This Spring I think Meric and I will come together and start writing new stuff or share what we’ve come up with over the winter. Hopefully we can start hashing some of it out on a tour around the same time.

NP: What’s your favorite thing about SF?

LK: That’s always changing, but right now it’s going skating on a sunny, fog-less day then drinking beers down by the beach.

Top that!
