Treading a tightrope of plaintive folk bleak enough to make you bawl, and lyrics brooding on death, poverty and the collapse of the American dream, SF artist Emily Jane White has emerged as something of a dark cloud over the Bay. Her 2010 album, Victorian America, blends blues and roots foundations with a fitting 19th Century sheen of violins, cellos, and tickly pianos. But don’t let the somber nature of her work turn you away, hers is an oddly gorgeous slice of the more sinister nature of man through music.
