For most people, the nesting process leads to the construction of a crib, maybe some painting. Laura Veirs isn’t most people. Inspired by the birth of her first child, the Portland-based singer-songwriter’s newest record Tumble Bee, is a collection of folk songs for children that draws heavily in spirit (and songbook) from great American folk singers like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. While the instrumentation is simple and the content is kid-friendly, there is a lot here for adults to love as well.
Songs swell with a sense of history, from the Harry Belafonte calypso tune “Jamaica Farewell” to the Civil War-era “Soldier’s Joy” (a duet with Colin Meloy). Veirs also takes full advantage of the opportunity to explore songs and melodies that would be out of place on a proper adult-oriented LP. There’s an innocence and sheer enthusiasm in this collection that is refreshing.
And yet, while on the face of things Tumble Bee seems like a bit of a stretch, the record isn’t very far removed from Veirs’ other work, which has been informed by folk and is mostly family friendly. Case in point: The best song on her last record (2010’s impressive July Flame) was about eating a peach (although it was also about desire and passion, clever metaphors being a trademark Veirs device).
Veirs has a reputation for songwriting that is both intelligent and catchy, and she does not dumb things down on Tumble Bee. Songs in the new collection address issues of disappointment and loss. The title track, in fact, buzzes and bounces amicably around even as Veirs recognizes that “she’ll sting me as she longs to be free.”
Veirs will be playing two shows at Noise Pop. An afternoon show geared towards the new record and families (with special family pricing) and a more traditional evening show that should allow for more of the cowpunk and pop Veirs is known for.
