Matthew Dear has been a hugely influential name in electronic music. Born and raised in Texas, Dear relocated to Detroit where he began absorbing its leg- endary house and techno scene. In 1999, he released his first single “Hands Up For Detroit.” Around the same time he co-founded the Ghostly Music label, which ended up being his means to carve out a niche for himself and fellow electronic music producers, arguably playing a significant part in shaping the next ten years of electronic music history. Ghostly and its dance floor focused sister label, Spectral Sound, have been responsible for releasing a ton of excellent music throughout those years: Com Truise, Gold Panda, and Phantogram are just a few of the more recent members of this dynasty.
As for the music itself, Dear tends toward minimal, thumping beats and bouncy melodies. He uses self- recorded samples, and has said that there is never a grand scheme when he sits down to write music. Dear’s vocal style is sort of glammed-out, reminiscent of Bowie’s early years. He’s claimed a wide span of influences: Brian Eno, Talking Heads, Nitzer Ebb, and Adonis are all artists that Dear has listed as heavy inspirations. As an artist he is consistently pushing his music into new territory. Involved in many different projects, he performs and records under such monikers as Audion, False, and Jabberjaw, and has been commissioned to do remixes for The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, and more. He is also a DJ and performs with a three-piece live band Matthew Dear’s Big Hands.
This year’s Noise Pop performance will be his first of this year in the US as he makes his way back from Australia/New Zealand and then goes on to the East Coast and Midwest. He will be releasing a new album, Beams, early this year.
