The world of electronic music is an ever-changing and thrilling place to be. The shift from traditional instrumentation has opened up an incredible realm of sonic possibilities, and the artists that are taking full advantage of these possibilities have been coming up with inventive ways to utilize the tools at their disposal. One such artist is Chris Dexter Greenspan, also known as “oOoOO” (pronounced “oh”). Cited as one of the artists at the forefront of the “drag” genre, which has been often associated with chillwave and other colorful genres such as witch haus or dark wave.
For many artists that are involved in this style of music the formula is beautifullyset. Take your favorite synths, sampling devices, a few mics, and record your tunes on your computer, upload them to SoundCloud, and you’re off and running. In oOoOO’s case, it went a little differently. He has worked with various record labels, including Swedon’s Emotion Records, Tri Angle Records based out of New York, NY, and Disaro Records out of Hollywood, CA. Originally a New Jersey native, he is currently setting up shop in our very own San Francisco. The music produced by oOoOO contains elements of electronica, shoegaze, dark-in- die, and mainstream pop. Heavily effect laden vocals play more of an instrumental role in these tunes, often adding to the percussive element and forgoing a more melodic role. Not necessarily the type of music that you’d find at an all night rave in the Mojave desert, oOoOO is best to be savored whilst wearing your best set of headphones.
As a standout in the genre, it is Greenspan’s luxury to be able to delve into other realms outside of the typical. His 2010 self-titled EP blends Middle Eastern elements through the album while showing his devo- tion to pop at it’s core.
