Formed in Albuquerque, NM, by Marty Crandall, after the former Shins member was unceremoniously “let go” from the band in 2010, Sad Baby Wolf is a prime example of the prodigal son story. Crandall heads up the group, mixing a return to hometown roots rock with a slow burning, southwestern, shoegaze style. Seemingly straightforward riffs ride about over hazy backdrops, and the group never fears adding a little distortion to their melodic output. At times expansive and even a bit ethereal, Sad Baby Wolf is disarmingly evocative and undeniably promising.
