Julie Ann Baenziger, who goes by Sea of Bees, sings her songs with a voice that is so delicate, pure, and nasally in that sort of innocence-inducing way, that you don’t realize her songs have pretty sharp teeth until they are already in you. Hers is a mildly deceptive approach to songwriting that coats tales of loss and longing in honey and sunshine. It’s a slight-of-hand that Sacramento indie-folk chanteuse didn’t invent, but she is none-the-less very adept at her craft, which would justify any comparison to the Sundays, The Innocence Mission, or the Delgados. Her new album, Orangefarben, will be released in May.
