San Francisco quartet Social Studies bill themselves as thinking man’s pop, and their music does not want for catchy riffs or heady lyricism. Their debut, Wind Up Wooden Heart (on SF-based label Antenna Farm Records), is both ambitious and mature, driven by an enthusiasm for power-pop, but buoyed by attention to details. The band isn’t afraid to play in a minor key or throw a violin at the listener every now and again, which helps to mix things up and distinguish them from other female driven indie-pop acts like Camera Obscura and The Postmarks.
