It’s not entirely uncommon to come across a band that both confuses and intrigues you. Florida natives Surfer Blood did just that when I first had an opportunity to hear them. A friend of mine put their first album, Astro Coast, on his turntable and I was immediately struck by the heavily reverbed track “Swim.”
Poppy and hook laden, the song kept my interest right off the bat. I continued to listen to the album and found that they had a certain familiarity to them, reminding me of bands like Vampire Weekend and The Talking Heads. I ended up picking up the vinyl a few weeks later. Quite the amount of buzz has been circulating around this band. Having only begun in 2009 while attending college, Paul Pitts and Tyler Schwarz began recording the majority of their debut album on what they say was “a cheap Pro Tools rig” in their off campus apartment. The album was released through Kanine Records out of Brooklyn, NY, and was immediately met with high praise. “Swim,” which had been released as a single, was named one of “The Top 100 tracks of 2009” by Pitchfork, and made several band-to-look- out-for lists that year.
For being such a young band, they have undergone a rigorous touring schedule, including support slots for The Pixies, ...and you will know us by the Trail of Dead, among others. They were invited to perform at All Tomorrow’s Parties when Les Savy Fav curated the event this year in Minehead, England. In October of last year, the band released their latest EP, Tarot Classics, which has been met with equally high praise. The band has since made the jump to a major label (Warner Bros.)and will assuredly be on the road a good long while.
