Do the Fresh & Onlys ever take a breath? This will be their fourth appearance at Noise Pop–and these days, it’s as a headlining act. Founded back in 2004 by Tim Cohen (Black Fiction) and Shayde Sartin (Skygreen Leopards), theirs is a history of seemingly unending releases and tours.
As this bio goes to press, they are putting the finishing touches on a fourth album for Mexican Summer. That’s a feat in and of itself–but it doesn’t even begin to account for nearly a solid year of touring and the Secret Walls EP (Sacred Bones) released at the start of the year. Equally impressive is the manner in which the band’s sound has continued to evolve: from the spiky twang of their self-titled release on Castle Face to the rough and bouncy jangle of Grey Eyed Girls (Woodsist) to the spooky, commanding reverb of Play It Strange (In The Red), the band hasn’t taken a second to rest. But studio ingenuity aside, the Fresh & Onlys are, first and foremost, a band of melodies. A song like “Secret Walls” (the title track from the aforementioned EP) is highly crafted shoegaze in recorded form. When Tim sings it acoustically, however, the melody is revealed, lending it the dreamy wistfulness of an abandoned campfire song.
The band have crafted their own strain of garage with a heart–take raucous shimmery love songs, like “Diamond in the Dark (August in My Mind EP, Captured Tracks)”- “Let’s you and I make eyes again / Up in the sky tonight.” Noise Pop has always been a welcoming home to local acts: whether as a debutante ball for a brand new band or a chance for a well-established act to look across a crowded hall and see friends who have been there from day one. The Fresh & Onlys are definitely at the latter point, returning to an ever growing hometown audience.
