Born on the shores of San Diego, the four members who make up indie rock outfit The Soft Pack now call L.A. home, and the world their stage. The Pack formed in 2007 when guitarists Matt Lamkin and Matty McLoughlin, both raised on a stream of MTV and The Replacements, returned from college and committed to making music that mattered to them. In the style of their childhood idols, the two instinctively began writing songs as simple as they were memorable. Joined by drummer Brian Hill and bass- ist Dave Lantzman, the group originally went by the moniker The Muslims, until a barrage of ignorance convinced them to switch to a less controversial/less distracting name for the sake of focusing on the music itself. Following the change and the move to L.A., The Soft Pack unleashed their sharp, spirited rock on the world at large and instantly created the kind of positive buzz the band deserves.

Marked by an uninhibited retro sound and nods to their predecessors, combined with a fresh and en- thused edge, the group moves between ‘70s punk and ‘80s garage rock so swiftly that the two become one in the same. In early 2010, The Soft Pack unveiled their critically lauded self-titled LP, easily and infectiously jaunting through 10 energetic tracks in the vein of Wire or The Stooges. Their tight and heady rhythm and Lamkin’s signature vocals are a shot of stripped-down and superbly catchy songs. Their new album, out in early 2012, promises to be more panoramic and abundant in sound, featuring organs and even horns at times. Yet, even as the band widens their scope, the defiant and driving core of The Soft Pack remains in place. Live, the band has been seeing more and more festivals and varied venues hosting their sets, so it will be especially exciting to find the four members back in an intimate setting like Cafe Du Nord for a truly up-close and immediate Soft Pack experience.
