Bidding adieu to the two-and-a-half year hiatus that followed their self-titled third full-length and fresh off of a European tour, the two-piece of Adam Stephens (guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Tyson Vogel (drums, vocals) have written new material that will give a nod back to the Delta blues and a high-five to roots-based Americana.

Taking the name of their band from the title of a story by James Joyce in Dubliners, the garage-punk influenced Two Gallants formed in 2002. However, Stephens and Vogel were no strangers to making music together–they’d been playing together since they were pre-teens and had toured together as solo artists before releasing their debut album as a two-piece, The Throes, when they were only 21. The Throes was met with critical acclaim as Stephens and Vogels introduced their raucous blend of dynamic songwriting and evocative, narrative lyrics. The duo told stories that had a timeless and universal quality to them–infused with youthful energy and perspective, their songs explored the familiar feelings of grief, anger, desperation, and heartache layered on top of a loud and rocking soundtrack.

Comparisons between the Two Gallants and the likes of Bob Dylan and The White Stripes were immediately drawn, and the band found themselves wedged in with the good company of other independent revivalist musicians. In 2005, the band signed with Saddle Creek Records and released What the Toll Tells, which featured the singles, “Las Cruces Jail” and “Steady Rollin.” They took a momentary pause from their established sound to release the stripped down EP, The Scenery of Farewell, which featured additional string instruments and the piano, and addressed the experiences of being on the road. The angst-ridden Two Gallants was released in 2007, and marked a solid 5-year run of incessant songwriting, recording, and touring for Stephens and Vogel. Throughout their touring, Two Gallants earned a reputation for truly “bringing it” when they performed live–earplugs are needed when the high-energy Two Gallants take the stage. After a well-deserved break, the duo is ready to let loose and bring some southern-inspired rock and soul back to the City.
