Will
Sprott is the songwriter & singer of the musical combo the Mumlers.
One of his great grandfathers played piano accompaniment to silent
films in a small town in Ohio before the advent of the talkie, another
traveled around Africa in the '20s & '30s with a band of three
golden-voiced sisters playing a collapsable pump organ & singing
gospel music with the financial backing of a wealthy poultry farmer. His
great uncle was a prolific author & scholar of the paranormal who
named the Bermuda Triangle. Many of the women in his family have been
librarians, although one worked in a candy factory. Many of the men are
war veterans or have worked on one side or the other of the legal
professions, although one built small trees for scale models of urban
environments.
He has released two records with his band: Thickets & Stitches (2008) & Don't Throw Me Away (2009).
Since then he has spent a lot of time on the road zigzagging around the
continent, singing songs. His musical travels have led him from sea to
shining sea performing everywhere from the Warfield in San Francisco to
the Bowery Ballroom in New York City & lots of watering holes in
between, sharing stages with many of his favorite artists along the
way. Without
the ramshackle trappings of his band, the basic elements of words,
vocal warble & vibrating guitar strings are more easily heard.
"Sprott
is a writer's writer, turning glorious phrases and crafting storylines
that employ classic sentiments and themes but tackle them with a unique
touch that feels ancient and natural, as if he's got a playbook full of
secret audibles that can be claimed for his own." —Sean Moeller,
Daytrotter
"Will Sprott is the frontman for the Mumlers,
San Jose’s most exciting musical export since the Count Five. As a solo
performer, Will Sprott is a bit more subdued than the Beefheart
inflected New Orleans vibe of his full band, but no less complex, freed
to try his skillful hand at capturing the raw essence of 75 years of
collected American pop music. " —Paul Koehler, Antenna Farm Records
